Sustainability in Thrifting
This post will discuss the sustainability benefits thrifting offers.
When you hear the word “sustainable”, what first comes to mind? Possibly recycle, reuse, and reduce. For today’s blog, we’re going to focus on the “reuse” and “reduce”.
The very definition of a thrift store is a place where one can donate items (mostly clothing) to be resold for another person to use. Sustainability in fashion has become a new frontier as Gen Z’s values have shifted to caring more about where their clothing comes from and where it ends up after being used. According to undiechest.org, a person in America disposes about 80 pounds of clothes/textiles per year. Most of which end up in landfills where clothing is not properly broken down. The improper disposable of non-biodegradable items is hurting our environment, but there are a few lifestyle changes we can make to aid in the reduction of non-biodegradable waste. One of these lifestyle changes is purchasing clothes from a thrift store rather than fast fashion retailers.
As I stated before in my last blog post, thrifting is not only affordable but also a sustainable way to shop vintage and the latest fashions. Even if you don’t prefer to shop at a thrift store, donating clothing to them is a great way to contribute to a sustainable environment. By donating clothing, or other household items, to a thrift store waist is reduced and other people have the opportunity to purchase an item for a lower price.
So, the next time you’re looking to purchase a new sweater or need to rid your closet of last seasons fashion trends, check out your nearest thrift store to either make a sustainable purchase or donate your used items to a good cause.
